What Is SEO

Today's Lesson: What Is SEO?

In the simplest terms, search engine optimization – or SEO – is a set of techniques that make it easier for people to find your website on the internet. In more technical terms, it is “improving the visibility of a website within ‘organic’ search results.”

The goal of SEO is to drive visitors to your website to learn more about the products and services you offer and ultimately purchase those goods or services.

Optimizing a website includes both “on-site” and “off-site” techniques.

On-Site SEO Strategies

On-site techniques include anything we do to your website to improve its visibility and clarify its purpose to search engines. Examples include:

  • Creating URLs that include keywords and phrases
  • Optimizing page titles with keyword and phrases
  • Writing and editing body copy that is both reader and search engine friendly
  • Highlighting keywords and phrases within body copy
  • Optimizing images with titles and alt. text
  • Writing meta descriptions
  • Building a network of internal links from page to page

Off-Site SEO Strategies

You’ve probably already guessed that off-site SEO includes techniques that happen somewhere other than your website. Once the on-site SEO is complete, this becomes the ongoing and critically important process that earns domain authority, page rank, and better search engine position.

Among the most effective off-site SEO techniques are:

  • Directory submissions
  • Article syndication and marketing
  • Press release syndication
  • Social bookmarking
  • Link sharing

SEO Is Organic

We use the term “organic” quite often to describe many phenomena associated with search engine results and ranking. What we mean is that the way people search and the formulas search engines use to rank websites is always changing. That’s why it’s so important to have an ongoing SEO strategy. Without long term planning, search rankings that we earn can quickly fade away. In other words, it’s important to continue optimizing a website and doing the off-site to work to ensure that any gains we make aren’t lost over time. Getting get search engine rankings is one thing. Keeping them is something else altogether.
